Broken U(1) gauge symmetry and excitations in Bose liquids

چکیده
We derive the low-energy effective field theory at finite temperature of Bose condensed liquids (e.g., superfluid 4He) directly from the breakdown of the global gauge symmetry U(1). The theory can immediately yield the Landau quantum hydrodynamics. The Bogoliubov type spectrum of low-energy collective excitations is given in the zeroth order of this theory and the momentum and temperature dependences of the damping of excitations are obtained by simple power counting. The well-known Hugenholtz-Pines theorem is understood in terms of the nonrelativistic Goldstone theorem. PACS: 67.40.Db, 11.15.Ex, 05.30.Jp

Broken U(1) symmetry and excitations in Bose liquids
We consider the low-energy effective field theory at finite temperature of Bose condensed liquids (e.g., superfluid 4He). A most general model-independent effective Lagrangian is derived directly from the breakdown of the global symmetry U(1). We show that it can yield one form of Landau quantum hydrodynamic Hamiltonian. In order to demonstrate its usefulness, this effective Lagrangian is emplo...
متن کاملQuantum Orders and Symmetric Spin Liquids
A concept – quantum order – is introduced to describe a new kind of orders that generally appear in quantum states at zero temperature. Quantum orders that characterize universality classes of quantum states (described by complex ground state wave-functions) is much richer then classical orders that characterize universality classes of finite temperature classical states (described by positive ...

Underlying the quantum theory of many-particle non-relativistic systems are the canonical quantum fluids superfluid phases of Bosons and Fermiliquid phases of Fermions. These two quantum phases of matter are extremely well understood, and are both accessible from models of weakly interacting particles. The only low energy excitation in a superfluid is the Goldstone mode of the broken particle n...
متن کاملEffective field theory approach to Bose–Einstein condensation
We consider the low-energy collective excitations at finite temperature of Bose– Einstein condensed gases (and liquids as well). A most general model-independent effective Lagrangian is written down according to a prescription obtained from the breakdown of the global symmetry U(1). To show how the theory predicts easily, we derive the momentum and temperature dependence of the damping of excit...
متن کاملNodal Liquids and Duality
Using a SU(2) × U(1) gauge theory for a t–J model around a node of the Fermi surface, we discuss patterns of dynamical symmetry breaking, which may lead to a pseudogap phase and to the appearance of narrow one-dimensional spatial structures, induced by the presence of holes. A possible connection with stripe phases is briefly discussed by passing to an appropriate dual theory. We discuss confin...
